Telematics data ownership: what Samsara and Geotab keep
Updated
A fleet that wants to license years of driving data reads its telematics contract first. Samsara's terms answer the ownership question plainly and keep something back.
Ask about my sensor data 6 of the 11 IoT platforms we read say the readings belong to the business. Tell us what your devices log and where it is stored, and we will reply by email.
The readings are the customer's
Samsara's master terms of service and its UK terms both say the customer owns all Customer Data and that Samsara will keep it confidential. Its trial agreement says the same of data captured by trial hardware.

What Samsara keeps
The same terms define a class of anonymised, de-identified or aggregated data relating to the customer's use of the products, which is not the customer's. Geotab's main services agreement goes further in words: Geotab and its licensors own Aggregated Data.

Take a copy before you leave
Samsara's terms say Customer Data stored beyond its retention policies may be deleted immediately, and promise no export at the end of the contract. AWS, by contrast, gives customers 30 days after termination to retrieve their content. Pull the archive out while the account is live.

Drivers and personal data
The ICO counts location data among the identifiers that can make information personal data. Trips tied to a named driver need clearing before they are licensed; see who owns sensor data.
